Events at Withington Baths -

Please check dates carefully - some events are left on this page AFTER they have finished as we want a record of the varied things we do at Withington Baths.

THE GREAT GET TOGETHER : SATURDAY 17TH JUNE 2017
We couldn't have had a more glorious day for this wonderful lunch. Around eighty guests came to our Age Friendly event designed to get members of our local community out and about, having fun and meeting people. The Great Get Togethers were a success all over the UK and a super thing to be part of.
Super organisation by LWB & Old Moat Labour, sponsored by Southway Housing and Forever Manchester and with delicious food made by Tailored Chefs, the garden planted & painted by Helen & Tess, music by the Stockport Ukuleles, salsa dancing and a jazz trio - the day was a blast!! (Big thanks also to Southway employees for their Community Day getting our garden ship-shape for summer).

Thanks so much to all who came along, those who helped arranged the event and to our amazing volunteers on the day.Check out our Facebook page to see the fab images from the day.

Next one at Christmas, so watch this space!
SUNDAY 6th NOVEMBER 2016 : SENSORY GARDEN "DROP IN" EVENT 2pm - 4pm
In collaboration with The Old Moat Greenies, we'll be holding a drop-in event, to celebrate all things autumn, in our new Sensory Garden. We hope to have hot soup and bread, holistic activities and children's activities. All welcome!
FRIDAY 30th SEPTEMBER 2016 : National Sporting Heritage Day 12 - 6pm
The History Group at Victoria Baths has put together a small temporary exhibition on the baths and wash houses of Manchester and notable local swimmers with a connection to Withington to display at Withington Baths on September 30th. The exhibition sets a brief national context for the emergence of public baths and wash houses around the country before then focusing on the experience in the Manchester area. Initially, the provision of public baths and wash houses was by local philanthropists rather than the local authority. This changed with the Baths & Wash Houses Act 1846, although Manchester Corporation only adopted the Act in 1877.

The Manchester & Salford Baths & Laundries was established as a charitable organisation in 1855, opening its first baths in Greengate, Salford the following year. As an organisation, its profitability was variable, being dependent upon the weather, local employment rates and price of fuel. Its assets were divided between Manchester and Salford Corporations in 1877 and the charity disbanded.

By the early 20th century, Manchester was the country’s leading local authority in the provision of public baths, operating 32 indoor pools. 6 new pools were added between 1904 – 1913, notably Victoria and Withington Baths. With cut backs in funding in the 1980s, many local authorities ceased to fund baths. By 2014, only 7 pools were still operating including the Manchester Aquatics Centre built for the Commonwealth Games 2002. Hough End Leisure Centre opened in Chorlton in 2015.

Three celebrated Withington swimmers are also featured, each representing England and Great Britain at international competitions in the 1930s: Zilpha Grant and the Wolstenholme sisters, Cecelia and Beatrice. http://www.nationalsportingheritageday.org.uk/

SATURDAY 24th SEPTEMBER 2016 - Sensory Garden Event

As we leave summer behind, and welcome autumn, our Sensory Garden is still being used as a venue for events. Soak up the last of the last sun of summer at Withington Baths as we host an afternoon of  tea, cakes, holistic therapies & more. This is a drop-in event, to which all are invited and will run from 1pm-3pm.

WEDNESDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2016 - Historic Pools of England Event
We were delighted to an event with Historic Pools of England recently - and to receive this feed back from the group :

"The afternoon ended in Withington Baths where team spirit, dedication and hard work have ensured that the pool is not only open, but running as a successful business.  And this is an operation that is expanding; with its place at the heart of the community, Love Withington Baths is able to respond exactly to the needs of those living and working in the area.  This includes the Bathhouse Project, made possible through crowd source funding, which will strip out the 1980s additions to the former female bathhouse and take the space back to its Edwardian roots. No more false ceilings, or layers of paint covering original tiles as the team sets to work to transform the space into somewhere that can be used for classes including baby massage and yoga."

SUNDAY 17th JULY - The Official Launch of the LWB Sensory Garden
The official launch of our Sensory Garden was an amazing event! We even had warm sunshine in July - who'd have thought? With big thanks to all involved - Helen & Brian, Old Moat Greenies, Sian, and all of the businesses and trades who went the extra mile to help make our Garden that little bit extra special :)

CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN JUNE 2016
Eaxactly one year on, since our group started running Withington Baths and Leisure Centre, we're now CROWDFUNDING, to transform Studio 2, the old female bathhouse, into a beautiful holistic studio and community events space. Soaring airy roof lanterns will be revealed by the removal of the 1980’s lowered ceiling tiles, the wall paint removed from the original tiles, stained glass mended and luxury underfloor heating will replace the damp concrete floor. This stunning redesign and restoration will further enhance a building already firmly in the hearts of local people and give a taste of what could be the future for a revitalised Withington Baths.

UPDATE - OUR CROWDFUNDER CLOSED ON MONDAY 4TH JULY AND WITH JUST OVER £17,000 RAISED, OUR SUMMER IS GOING TO BE SPENT RENOVATING STUDIO 2. WITH THE BIGGEST THANKS TO ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS AND PLEDGERS - YOU ROCK!
